It's another early start for the Green River north of Pinedale, WY. The river has cleared at least one month ahead of normal and the fishing is beginning to pick up. Thus far, the hatches have been somewhat inconsistent, making streamers the most productive patterns on a given day. Any day now, however, we expect the hatches to increase in frequency and intensity with a corresponding improvement in fishing activity. If nothing is hatching, try large (size 4), full bodied streamers such as JJ Specials, Woolly Buggers, Kiwi Muddlers, and Double Bunnies. Darker colors like black, olive and brown are usually best, though tan can also be effective. Sporatic hatches of Salmon Flies and Golden Stones have been observed and the trout have been on them when this has occured. But this has not yet been an every day event though we expect that to change very soon. Also be on the lookout for various species of caddis in the size 14 /12 range, especially towards evening. Size 10 Gray Drakes and Gray Drake spinners should also be arriving soon. While current water levels are fine, the river has dropped dramatically in the last 10 days. Consequently float trips upstream of Warren Bridge will soon be a thing of the past (at least until next year). While the fishing has kicked in earlier than usual, also expect that the traditional float fishing season to end earlier as well due to low water levels.
