Green River Fishing Report

June 10, 2005

Green River, near Pinedale, WY

This last week we have been experiencing cooler temperatures and the Green has dropped significantly. I don’t believe that run-off is done yet, but the cooler weather has curtailed the run-off for awhile. It is currently running at 1180 cfs and has been fluctuating between 1100 and 1300 for the last five days. It is still off in color but very fishable.  In other words if you have the time, I’d give it a go.

We haven’t seen any major hatches, so the dry fly fishing has been comme ci, comme ca. Streamer and nymph fishing have picked up considerably and is becoming more consistent every day. Kiwi Sculpins, Olive and Black Wooly Buggers, and JJ Specials are always reliable streamer patterns for the Green. Some new streamers that you might want to give a try are: The Conehead Beldar, Stalcup Sculpin, or a Platte River Flash Fry. Though we have seen very few adult stoneflies they will be hatching soon so the nymphs will be very active making them readily available to the fish. Salmonfly (pteronarcys) and Golden Stone (Hesperoperla) nymphs will both be working. Kaufman patterns for both, will be hard to beat. For something different: Last year we started using two Rubber Leg take-offs that are speckled Brown/Orange and Coffee/Black and they proved to be very effective stonefly imitations.

With warmer weather the dry fly fishing will be picking up.  Besides the big stones keep an eye open for Caddis. Late afternoon and evening hatches can be worth the chase.

Until next time good fishing,

Howard Cole
