Fishing Guide Bio's

The High Country Flies guide staff is characterized by its low key approach to providing the best overall experience possible. While catching trout is no doubt the name of the game, becoming a better, more informed angler is equally important. After a day with one of our guides, we think you'll agree.

Tom Ferris

Jackson Hole ski patrolman by winter and ace fishing guide in summer, Tom lives the life most can only dream of. But hey, somebody has to do it. Tom's extensive guiding background includes two summers chasing salmon in Alaska (don't bother asking where) as well as years as a spring creek specialist for River Meadows Ranch.

Ralph Hlebak

Ralph has been at this game for a long time. Former head guide for Bressler Outfitters as well as a hunting and snowmobile guide, Ralph's fishing clients have been the beneficiaries of his vast outdoor experience. Where burn-out may have overtaken a lesser man, Ralph has been able to maintain his enthusiasm via liberal use of his sense of humor.

Tom Toolson

Tom's been a fishing and hunting guide since Wyoming was just a Territory. He knows the Snake, Green and New Fork rivers like the back of his weathered hand. Tom balances his vast experience and Old School style with a sly wit and endless enthusiasm for getting clients into fish. A day spent floating with Tom is a classic experience you won't soon forget.

Ryan Hall

Ryan is the first High Country Flies fishing guide to have made the transition from shop employee to guide, and for good reason. Ryan exemplifies the low key professional approach we prefer at High Country. His exceedingly patient demeanor is a blessing to anyone who is unsure of their abilities but seeks to improve their casting and fishing skills.

Al Michalski

Al has been guiding for 30 years in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, New Zealand, the Caymans and the Bahamas. Al's breadth of experience makes any day spent fishing with him highly educational. He likes long walks on the beach and pina coladas and gettin' caught in the rain. Margaritas are ok too.

Bruce Smithhammer

Bruce Smithhammer has fished from Patagonia to Alaska, and is a frequent contributor to a number of fly fishing magazines. Having spent 12 years as a professional outdoor educator prior to coming to High Country Flies, Bruce has honed his skills as a patient teacher. His humor and passion for angling will make a day of fishing a fun and unforgettable learning experience.
