Cole's Skwalla

Cole's Skwalla

Hook: Dia-Riki 730 or standard 2X long hook
Thread: Uni-thread 8/0, Black
Egg Sac: Open cell foam, Black
Body: Olive brown dubbing
Underwing:  Two dark dun saddle hackles
Overwing: Dyed yellow calftail
Hackle: Furnace or brown, two feathers
Legs: Brown rubber, medium

Tying Tips

  • We prefer open cell foam for the egg sac because it is not as dense as closed cell foam, making the fly lighter.
  • Pull hackle fibers down along hackle stem trapping barbules and stem under thread.
  • Before tightening wing with thread, adjust to length and then trim hackle tips.
  • At the head of the fly, take one wrap of hackle behind the rubber legs, two wraps between the legs and the rest in front of the legs. We wrap both hackles at the same time.

Fishing Tips

  • Imitates the Skwalla stonefly, which is a very low floater. Make sure the hackle wings are positioned low  to the body as well.
  • Give it a twitch on occasion. The naturals like to run around on the surface film.
