Green River Fishing Report
September 9, 2009
Water levels on the upper Green remain excellent for this time of year. This has made floating the river still very viable. Most years by late August, flows get so low that floating the Green becomes dubious at best and you really have to want it to do any boat fishing. Along with the good flows the fishing has also held up very well.
Grasshopper season is in full swing so you should have a good assortment of hopper patterns. Large attractors have also been producing like Bugmeisters, Chubby Chernobyl’s, and natural Tarantulas. I’m quite confident that many of your personal favorite attractor patterns will also do the trick. When wade fishing, there is more of an opportunity to “match the hatch”. You will have to do a little entomology home work and figure out what is going on. Look for Mahogany Duns, Blue Wings (Baetis), and possibly, still a few PMD’s. Traditional Nymph fishing can always be an effect technique on the upper Green, but keep in mind you will see your fair share of Whitefish. Streamer fishing is also a proven method for the Green, especially on overcast days or low-light situations. The venerable JJ Special, Mike’s Organ Donor, and Stenersen’s CFO are always good Brown Trout streamers.
This year’s flows on the upper Green may allow us to float the river all fall. As I already have alluded to, this rarely happens, so you might want to take advantage of a good situation. Conditions on the Green can change dramatically, for up-to-the-minute information contact us here at the shop.
Until next time, good
fishing,
Howard Cole
